Renewables to Drive Construction Boom in Regional Australia
September 3 , 2025 | 1638

Australia's regions are poised for an unprecedented construction boom, with renewable energy projects serving as the primary driver of growth. According to the latest forecast from research firm Macromonitor, the pace of expansion in construction activity across regional Australia over the next two years is expected to be twice that of the capital cities.
Macromonitor projects that regional construction activity will rise by AUD 23 billion (USD 14.9 billion), or 19%, between 2024/25 and 2026/27. This is well ahead of the AUD 12 billion, or 7%, increase expected in metropolitan centers. Director Nigel Hatcher described the trend as an 'explosion' of projects spanning wind, solar, pumped hydro, energy storage, and transmission infrastructure, which are predominantly located outside capital cities.
This momentum is attributable to record growth in clean energy. A total of 4.4 GW of new solar, wind, and storage capacity was commissioned across the National Electricity Market in the past financial year. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) expects this figure to accelerate further, forecasting between 5.2 GW and 10.1 GW of new renewable and storage capacity to be added annually until the end of the decade. This rollout will coincide with the progressive retirement of coal-fired power plants.
Key growth regions include central Queensland and the New England and northwest areas of New South Wales, which have become prime targets for solar and battery storage developers. Beyond energy, Macromonitor highlights additional drivers for regional construction, including housing, roads, railways, and minerals development.
Renewable Energy Construction Outlook – Australia, as reported by Macromonitor, shows that renewable energy has already transformed Australia’s construction landscape, with spending on related infrastructure increasing 74% in the past four years — from AUD 13.8 billion in 2020 to AUD 24 billion in 2024. It forecasts renewable energy construction to peak at more than AUD 36 billion in 2027/28, marking a structural shift in where and how Australia builds.
Qn-SOLAR’s Perspective
The rapid expansion of renewable projects in regional Australia underscores the sector’s role as a catalyst for broader economic development. For developers, EPCs, and investors, this trend highlights two key priorities:
l Ensuring access to high-performance, reliable solar modules to meet the accelerating pace of deployment.
l Positioning solutions for regions such as Queensland and New South Wales, where solar and storage adoption will define the energy transition.
At Qn-SOLAR, we deliver durable, high-efficiency PV products designed for large-scale projects in evolving grid and policy environments — helping partners capture growth in regional markets while building long-term resilience in Australia’s clean energy transformation.
